Happy Labor Day Weekend to you my fellow laborers!
“All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity.”
– Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.
Here’s one of my favorite environmental portraits of Metal Sculptor extraordinaire Mark! Working.
I love the challenge of location and environmental portraits. For me it's about placing the subject in the perfect background that shows the environment but still highlights the person I'm photographing. I had the pleasure of photographing renowned artist and metal sculptor Mark Castator while he was working on a new piece in his studio. I was immediately drawn to the light on the repeated square shapes of his sculpture contrasted by the gentle arc of the chain in the background. His intense focus on the metal grinding tool and the shower of sparks it creates adds a very dynamic quality to the portrait.
