The Crankset Project

A Study in Bicycle Engineering and Design

Crank.set: noun /krangk·set/
The component of a bicycle drivetrain that converts the reciprocating motion of the rider’s legs into rotational motion used to drive the chain, which in turn drives the rear wheel.

The crankset is the centerpiece of a bicycle component group and often sets the design aesthetic for the full system. It is the largest visual element in the drivetrain and the one responsible for turning effort into speed.

The Crankset Project is an ongoing photographic archive, inspired by a lifelong fascination with bicycles, their elegant engineering and the beauty of simple systems built from complex parts.

Cranksets are where power becomes motion.

Studio Photography for Bicycle Components

The Crankset Project applies disciplined studio lighting and consistent composition to document bicycle cranksets as both engineering artifacts and design objects.

Featured in this series:

  • Vintage aluminum cranksets

  • Modern carbon and composite systems

  • Classic road and track components

  • Contemporary performance drivetrains

  • Detail studies of machining, finishes and branding

Each crankset is photographed against a neutral background to eliminate distraction and emphasize geometry, materials and craftsmanship.
